Most bad haircuts are not cut badly. They are cut for the wrong morning.

A shape that only works with forty minutes and a round brush is not a shape, it is a rental. If you wash it and leave, the cut has to carry the whole job on its own — and that is a different haircut from the one in the photograph.

So the first question here is never what you want it to look like. It is what you actually do.

The shape we are asked for most, and the one most often miscommunicated. There are roughly ten in circulation and most disappointment comes from client and stylist using the same word for different haircuts — a French bob and an Italian bob are not variations of each other, they are separate decisions about weight, length and where the jaw sits.

Layers, face framing and long hair

Length is the easy part. Where the weight sits is the haircut.

Fine hair loses structure when the shape goes soft — it does not read as long, it reads as flat. Dense hair feels heavy well before it looks longer, so the cue for cutting it is weight rather than length. Wavy and curly hair holds a shape considerably longer, but only when the cut was built around the movement instead of against it.

Two people can ask for the same haircut and need it done four weeks apart. That is normal, and it is worth knowing which one you are.

Cutting around colour

If you have highlights, balayage or dimensional colour, the cut decides where that colour ends up sitting. Remove the wrong length and you remove the brightest pieces. Take too much interior weight out of a balayage and the placement stops reading.

Men's cuts

Yes, and properly — $55, forty-five minutes, cut for your texture and how you wear it rather than to a clipper number. What we do not do is fades, beard work or barbering, and we would rather say so than do a version of it.
