Hair Crimes.

Sometimes hair has a history. Box color layered over old highlights. Blue-black next to brown. Orange through the ends. Several tones on one head. A color that looked manageable until you started trying to remove it.

We call these Hair Crimes. Not because the client did something wrong, and not because we are here to criticise another stylist. It is simply our slightly less serious name for the complicated color situations that make corrective work interesting.

Color correction is one of Nancy’s primary specialties — 30+ corrective cases a year, from uneven home color and unwanted warmth to dark artificial pigment, banding and major color changes. Every Hair Crime starts with the same question:

what is already in the hair — and what will it let us do next?

Hair Crime No. 01

Blue-black, navy and brown → balanced Level 6 brown

What walked in.

  • Navy and blue-black through the front
  • Medium brown through other areas
  • Approximately Level 3 dark brown through the back

What she wanted. A Level 7 light golden brown.

What Nancy found. As the artificial pigment began coming out, strong orange underlying pigment appeared. That changed the correction. The question stopped being “how do we reach Level 7” and became how far this hair could responsibly be taken in one sitting.

The correction. Several corrective cleansing steps to remove and rebalance the previous color.

An even Level 6 brown

Hair Crime No. 02

DIY orange, red and brown → golden blonde dimension

What walked in.

  • Light orange
  • Darker orange
  • Deep red and maroon
  • Areas of light brown

What she wanted. A brighter, golden blonde result.

What Nancy found. The problem was not a lack of blonde. Highlights placed straight over several different tones and depths would have made the unevenness more obvious, not less.

The correction. Nancy cleaned and balanced the existing artificial color first. Once the foundation was even, she added golden blonde highlights for brightness and dimension.

Hair Crime No. 03

Level 2 black, gray growth and brassy ends → sun-kissed light brown

What walked in.

  • Approximately Level 2 black through much of the hair
  • Gray through the top
  • Orange and brassy color through the lower lengths

What she wanted. A natural-looking Level 7 direction — in her words, soft, warm light brown that looks kissed by the sun.

What Nancy found. Three different starting conditions on one head, each needing its own judgment before the finished color could read as one deliberate result.

The correction. Very dark pigment, gray growth and brassy lengths worked toward a single cohesive, believable result.

Lesson: Correction is often about making several different starting conditions look as though they always belonged together.

Why we show these

Color correction looks mysterious from the outside. A client sees orange hair and thinks make it blonde. A colorist sees which color is artificial and which is underlying pigment, which sections have been lightened before, where color has accumulated, how porous or fragile each area is, what can safely be removed, what should be left alone, and how far the hair should be taken today.

That judgment is the work. Some corrections finish in one appointment. Others need several, and in the more complex cases, work spanning multiple days. The objective is never how much we can do to the hair. It is deciding how much we should.
