The short answer
Ammonia-free hair color uses an alternative alkaliser, most often ethanolamine, to open the cuticle instead of ammonia. It is gentler on the scalp and has far less odour, and professional ammonia-free color can cover gray and lighten within a controlled range. Ammonia-free does not mean chemical-free, non-toxic or damage-free.
What we actually use, and what we will not claim
Touchée uses professional European ammonia-free color formulated with up to 99% organic and natural ingredients, depending on the service and the specific formula.
Here is what that does not mean, because the industry is careless about this and you deserve the accurate version:
- It is not chemical-free. Permanent color is chemistry by definition.
- It is not non-toxic or toxin-free. Those are marketing words with no regulated meaning in hair color.
- It is not damage-free. Any service that changes the color of hair alters its structure.
- “Organic” is not a certified category in professional hair color the way it is in food.
What it does mean is a lower-odour, lower-irritation service that is meaningfully kinder to the scalp, and a way of working that treats the long-term condition of your hair as part of the result rather than an acceptable casualty of it.
Why we work this way
Color is not a one-off transaction. If you are going to sit in this chair every six weeks for the next ten years, the compound effect of how gently the work is done matters more than how any single appointment looks on the day. Hair that has been treated carefully for a decade holds color better, reflects more light and cuts better. That is the actual argument for gentleness — it is a technical one, not a wellness one.

If you want genuine platinum, that is achieved with lightener and it is a real chemical service. We will do it, with bond protection, and we will be straight with you about what it costs your hair. What we will not do is call it organic.

Is organic hair color really organic?
Not in the certified, regulated sense that organic food is. There is no official organic standard for professional hair color. Our professional European color is ammonia-free and formulated with up to 99% organic and natural ingredients depending on the formula — that is a description of the ingredient profile, not a health claim.
Does ammonia-free color cover gray?
Yes, including resistant gray, when it is formulated correctly and processed for the full development time. Very resistant gray sometimes needs a pre-softening step first.
Is ammonia-free color less damaging?
It is gentler on the scalp and has far less odour, and the alkaliser is less aggressive. It is not damage-free. Any permanent color changes hair structure, and lightening always does.
Will ammonia-free color make my hair lighter?
Within a controlled range, generally one to three levels. Significant lightening — high-lift blonde, platinum — requires lightener, which is a different and stronger service.
Is ammonia-free color safe during pregnancy?
That is a question for your doctor, not your colorist, and we will not tell you otherwise. What we can say is that the service has significantly lower odour and less scalp irritation, and that many clients choose it for comfort reasons. Ask your physician and we will work around whatever they advise.
